Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
230 PM SST Thu Mar 28 2024

.Discussion...
Latest satellite data shows fair weather over the territory as the
ridge from previous forecasts strengthens in the area. However,
just east of Manu`a is scattered convective clouds moving west and
along the flow of the ridge. Expect an uptick in showers on
Friday as these clouds move in the area. In addition, the brief
weakening of the ridge will allow for a trough to develop across
the Samoa Islands through Friday night. Numerous showers and
light winds will hold for this time.

Thereafter, the ridge will briefly strengthen on Saturday, which
will push the aforementioned trough out of our area. Minimal
showers and variable winds are expected through Sunday. However,
a strong high pressure system building near New Zealand will
enhance a near-breezy southeast wind Sunday through Monday. As
the high dips slightly south, an active trough may develop by
Monday. This feature will dominate weather patterns for the end of
the forecast period.

Current wave heights observed via satellite are in the 5 to 7
foot range. GFS wave models depict a large southerly swell moving
in our area tonight through Friday. Although wave heights are not
expected to reach advisory thresholds (8 feet and higher) until
Sunday, the south swell could still produce strong currents and
surfs near shore. On the other hand, open waters will keep fairly
calm through Saturday.

However, an increase in windspeeds will generate rough seas by
Sunday. In addition, another set of swells from the south is
anticipated to pass through the territory Tuesday. Expect both
seas and surfs to reach advisory levels for this timeframe.
