...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1927, an outbreak of 34 strong and violent tornadoes
began from the Great Plains, across the Mississippi
Valley, to the Lower Great Lakes. Six of these occurred
on the 8th, two of which were violent F4s that struck
Central and Eastern Missouri. The first F4 struck
Central Missouri, where it tore across Camden and Miller
counties. Four were killed and 33 were injured. The
twister had a track 35 miles long, averaged 300 yards
wide, and caused $130,000 damage. Just after the first
F4 lifted, the second F4 developed in the center of
Missouri over Cole County. It tore a path 40 miles long
and around 400 yards wide as it moved northeast to Benton
City in Audrain County. This tornado killed 6, injured
30, and caused $170,000 damage.
