...RAINFALL WINDING DOWN BUT FLOODING STILL POSSIBLE ALONG THE
BLUE RIDGE TODAY...
.A low pressure system approaching from the west this morning is
poised to transition through the piedmont of the western
Carolinas later today. Southeasterly upslope flow is still
expected to wring out moderate rain showers across the eastern
escarpment of the mountains. The Watch is therefore extended into

...FLOOD WATCH NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON...
The Flood Watch is now in effect for
* A portion of western North Carolina, including the following
areas, Avery, Buncombe, Burke Mountains, Caldwell Mountains,
Eastern McDowell, Greater Burke, Greater Caldwell, Henderson,
McDowell Mountains, Mitchell, Polk Mountains, Rutherford
Mountains, Transylvania, and Yancey.
* until 4 PM EDT this afternoon
* Although rainfall rates are diminishing around the region,
locally moderate to heavy rain showers may still fall on
locations that have received 3 to 6 inches of rain in the past
24 hours. Runoff on these saturated soil conditions may yet
produce flooding in low-lying and flood prone areas in and
near the eastern escarpment of the North Carolina mountains.
* Flooding remains most likely along the upper reaches of the
French Broad River and its associated tributaries. Flooding
will also be possible along the western Catawba River chain in
the North Carolina foothills.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts of heavy rainfall.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Consider moving vehicles and other property from
known, flood-prone areas. Those living in areas prone to flooding
should be prepared to take quick action should flooding develop,
including fleeing to higher ground.
