Overall, it was a wet month for Northeast Kentucky and Central West Virginia. So much so, that Charleston experienced their 8th wettest July on record, with a total of 8.73 inches of rain. Much of the rain in those areas fell during the last two weeks of the month, with several heavy rainfall events noted. In contrast much of Southeast Ohio, Northern and Southern West Virginia were below normal for the month. This includes Beckley and Clarksburg. Temperatures across the region started off well above normal during the midst of a heat wave. Several sites reached at 95 degrees on the July 4th holiday. However, the last two weeks were characterized by below normal temperatures, coinciding with the wet pattern that set in. Still, the month as a whole was generally normal to slightly above normal. Below is a climatic summary for July for our climate sites... Charleston: Monthly average temperature of 75.9 degrees, which was 0.5 degrees above normal. There were 8 days of 90 degrees or higher. Monthly precipitation total of 8.73 inches, which was 4.94 inches above normal. Huntington: Monthly average temperature of 76.2 degrees, which was 0.5 degrees above normal. There were 7 days of 90 degrees or higher. Monthly precipitation total of 6.52 inches, which was 1.97 inches above normal. Parkersburg: Monthly average temperature of 75.8 degrees, which was 1.4 degrees above normal. There were 7 days of 90 degrees or higher. Monthly precipitation is missing due to several days of technical issues at the reporting site. Clarksburg: Monthly average temperature of 75.3 degrees, which was 2.8 degrees above normal. There were 10 days of 90 degrees or higher. Monthly precipitation total of 2.83 inches, which was 2.82 inches below normal. Elkins: Monthly average temperature of 70.3 degrees, which was 0.3 degrees above normal. Monthly precipitation total of 7.45 inches, which was 2.09 inches above normal. Beckley: Monthly average temperature of 71.8 degrees, which was 1.2 degrees above normal. Monthly precipitation total of 3.98 inches, which was 1.05 inches below normal. The lowest temperature observed at our climate sites was 48 degrees at elkins on the morning of July 8th. The warmest temperature observed at out climate sites was 95 degrees at Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, and Clarksburg on the afternoon of July 4th. $$
