...Severe Weather Awareness Week Begins Today...

April 21 to April 27 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in New York
and New England.

Everyone is urged to be weather ready by learning how to protect
themselves from the hazards of flooding, tornadoes, severe
thunderstorms and lightning.

Nationally, on average, severe weather kills 224 people per year,
including 104 from flooding, 53 from wind, 45 from tornadoes,
and 22 from lightning. Severe weather happens locally. The National
Weather Service Forecast Office in Albany New York issues 157 severe
thunderstorm warnings, 10 tornado warnings and 20 flash flood
warnings per year.

This week we will discuss severe weather terminology and safety.

Monday we review severe weather terms and definitions.

Tuesday the focus is on severe thunderstorms.

Wednesday we turn to severe weather preparedness and safety.

Thursday will feature a study of tornadoes with a review of
thunderstorm safety.

Friday is the day to look at the summer flood threat and provide
some safety rules.

Finally, on Saturday we will review the key items from this week
focusing on preparedness and safety.
