.OVERVIEW...

THE LATEST DROUGHT MONITOR ISSUED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE ON APRIL 24  SHOWS D2 TO D4 DROUGHT ACROSS MOST  OF
SOUTHWESTERN KANSAS.  AREAS FROM PRATT, DODGE CITY AND LAKIN SOUTH
TO THE OKLAHOMA STATE LINE WERE IN D3 DROUGHT TO D4 DROUGHT.  THERE
WAS AN AREA OF D4 (EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT) FROM ELKHART TO ULYSSES TO
LIBERAL TO ASHLAND ALONG THE OKLAHOMA STATE LINE.

CURRENT ENSO STATE...

THE ENSO STATE IS WEAK LA NINA AND THE OFFICIAL FORECAST FROM NCEP
CALLS FOR A NEUTRAL STATE BY LATE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER.

.HYDROLOGIC IMPACTS...

NONE.

.FIRE DANGER IMPACTS...

FUELS WILL CONTINUE TO BE SUPPORTIVE FOR ACTIVE FIRE BEHAVIOR UNTIL
SUFFICIENT GREENUP FROM SPRING RAINS OCCURS.

.AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS...

SOIL MOISTURE DEFICITS ARE ABOVE NORMAL FOR SOUTHWESTERN KANSAS
REGION PER CPC THROUGH EARLY SUMMER.

OUTLOOK...

THE SEASONAL DROUGHT OUTLOOK CALLS FOR PERSISTENT DROUGHT ACROSS
MOST OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHWESTERN KANSAS THROUGH JULY ALTHOUGH SOME
IMPROVEMENT IS EXPECTED.  THE WORST CONDITIONS WILL BE FROM DODGE
CITY SOUTH TO THE OKLAHOMA STATE LINE OR GENERALLY THE AREA
CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING D3 AND D4 DROUGHT.
