Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX

...New AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 306 AM CDT Wed Apr 10 2024

Early this morning, stratiform showers and scattered thunderstorms
were located along and east of I-35 with some isolated showers
further west into the southern Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande
Plains. The bulk of activity will push east of the area a little
after sunrise with any remaining isolated showers out west
dissipating around this time as well.

Drier and cooler conditions are expected today, although the most
noticeable feature will be the gusty winds expected through this
evening. Winds will continue to increase this morning out west and
over the higher terrain of the Hill Country, eventually spreading
east in the afternoon hours. The strongest winds today will be
located over the southern Edwards Plateau, Rio Grande Plains and the
Hill Country. A Wind Advisory is currently in effect for some
counties along the Rio Grande and will now expand eastward to the
areas listed above after 1 PM with the Wind Advisory ending for all
areas at 7 PM. Drier conditions in the west combined with these
winds will also lead to critical fire danger for counties along the
Rio Grande plus Zavala and Dimmit during the afternoon and early
evening. A Red Flag Warning has been issued from 2 through 8 PM for
these locations.

Winds will be decreasing Wednesday night with light winds across the
majority of the area by Thursday morning. Upper ridging and surface
high pressure will be building over the area Thursday with clear
skies, lighter wind and dry conditions expected.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 306 AM CDT Wed Apr 10 2024

Upper ridging continues to build over the area Thursday night into
Friday with surface high pressure moving east during the day on
Friday. This pattern will bring southerly flow back to South Central
Texas which will lead to a day to day warming trend along with
increasing cloudiness this weekend into early next week. Could see a
brief period of elevated fire weather conditions in the west on
Friday with low humidity and breezy southerly flow, otherwise expect
increasing humidity as well through the weekend. By Monday, could see
some temperatures near 100 degrees in our far southwestern areas of
the Rio Grande Plains.

An upper trough is expected to move over the Central Plains sometime
Monday night into Tuesday with only low end chances for any
precipitation in our area as the best forcing looks to be north of
South Central Texas. Temperatures look to remain on the warm side
going into next week, mainly in the 80s and 90s across the area.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 614 AM CDT Wed Apr 10 2024

Besides some lingering MVFR ceilings at AUS through mid-morning, VFR
conditions are expected through the forecast period. Gusty winds are
forecast across all of South Central Texas today. Expect northwest
wind from 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots this afternoon,
possibly higher at DRT. These windy conditions decrease after sunset
with clear skies and winds below 10 knots after 02-05Z Thursday.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 306 AM CDT Wed Apr 10 2024

Dry conditions will remain across western portions of the area
through Friday. Critical fire weather conditions are expected today
for western portions of the southern Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande
Plains due to low humidity and gusty wind. A Red Flag Warning has
been issued for this afternoon and early evening due to these
conditions. Winds will decrease quickly after sunset and stay light
through Thursday as high pressure moves into the area. High pressure
then moves east on Friday bringing back southerly flow to South
Central Texas. Still, low humidity in the west combined with breezy
southeasterly wind may may result in another period of near critical
to critical fire weather conditions. Humidity will be increasing
this weekend.
