Back in 2022, the NWS solicited comments on an experimental Surf Forecast Matrix product at two NWS Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) - Wilmington, OH and Wakefield, VA. Based on the favorable feedback received, five additional WFOs will provide this experimental product this year: Boston, MA (BOX), Mt. Holly, NJ (PHI), Brownsville, TX (BRO), Miami, FL (MFL) and Mobile, AL. Comments on this product from the 7 WFOs will be accepted until October 31, 2024. This product is designed to supplement the official Surf Zone Forecast (SRF) product by providing increased temporal resolution, with 3- and 6- hourly timing for weather conditions that are in the SRF, out to 6 days, as well as point-based forecasts for beaches along the coastlines of the issuing Weather Forecast Offices (WFO), enhance public safety decision making. The goal of this forecast matrix product is to increase awareness about rip current risk along beaches of the Atlantic and Gulf Coast by providing enhanced forecast timing of weather and wave conditions. This forecast matrix product utilizes the Nearshore Wave Prediction System (NWPS) probabilistic rip current model guidance.
