Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Binghamton NY
800 AM EDT Wed Mar 20 2024

The National Weather Service has declared March 18th through
March 22nd to be Flood Awareness Week in Pennsylvania.

Today`s topic: Flood information.

The National Weather Service uses AHPS for river observations and
forecasts at this time, with an upcoming transition to NWPS on
March 27th. The NWPS website will replace the AHPS website as
the primary source for NWS water prediction information.

What is AHPS?

AHPS is the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic
Prediction Service, an ongoing effort to modernize our hydrologic
services. AHPS provides improved river and flood forecasts and
water information across America to protect life and property, and
to ensure the nation`s economic wellbeing.

AHPS graphical products are available at our web site,
weather.gov/statecollege by clicking on the rivers and lakes link
at the top. AHPS will be transitioning to the National Water
Prediction Service, or NWPS, on March 27, 2024. You can access
NWPS by visiting water.noaa.gov after this transition date. AHPS
will remain online until May 26, 2024.

Who can benefit from AHPS?

Everyone who makes decisions based on water, including farmers,
river boat pilots, emergency managers, municipal water supply
officials, recreational boaters and water skiers, fishermen, and
dam operators. All of these people can all benefit from AHPS.

What will AHPS do for me?

Because every minute counts, AHPS will help emergency managers be
more proactive to "fight" a flood. AHPS provides information for
community leaders and business owners to make better life- saving
decisions about evacuating people or moving property before a
flood. The navigation community will be able to plan with better
confidence and optimize barge and shipping operations, saving
millions of dollars each year. Recreational users will be able to
stay out of harm`s way. AHPS, with its suite of enhanced
information, provides the public with more detailed and accurate
answers to the following questions:

How high will the rivers rise? When will the river reach its
peak? Where will the flooding occur? How long will the flood last?
How long will the drought last? How certain is the forecast?

What is NWPS?

NWPS will replace AHPS as the primary source for NWS water
prediction information on March 27, 2024. NWPS will leverage a
modernized web technology framework with an enhanced API
that will allow users to integrate operational forecast
information within their own applications along with retaining
the river forecast information that AHPS provided. You can access
NWPS at water.noaa.gov on March 27th. AHPS will continue to be
functional through May 26, 2024, after which all AHPS webpages
will redirect to the NWPS website.

Topics for the rest of flood awareness week:
Thursday: Flooding Causes and Severity.
Friday: Flood alerts.
