Weather Summary for Portions of the Central Plains
National Weather Service Hastings NE
348 AM CDT Sat May 11 2024

If you didnt know...the earths atmosphere is divided into roughly
five layers. Almost all the time...the most interesting weather
occurs in the troposphere...which is the layer of the atmosphere
closest to the ground...and includes the air we breathe.
However...early Saturday morning...the most interesting thing to
happen in a part of the atmosphere called the magnetosphere...and it
was a different kind of weather we call space weather. A strong
geomagnetic storm...which has been predicted for the last few
days...came to life late Friday night and early Saturday morning in
the form of the Aurora Borealis...otherwise known as the Northern
Lights. Thanks to a clear sky across the region...and the intense
energy ejected from the sun...young and old alike stayed up late and
witnessed some of the best display of natures upper atmospheric
beauty in years. While the Northern Lights happen quite
regularly...it is quite irregular to see them so vividly across
Nebraska and Kansas...as well across the United States as far south
as Georgia...southern Texas and southern California. Like the
weather we experience every day...the occurrences of geomagnetic
storms are somewhat forecastable. Looking ahead to late
tonight...the best viewing of the Northern Lights will be where you
might expect...farther north of Nebraska and Kansas.Back closer to
the surface of the earth...the weather day looks like a day the
local Chamber of Commerce would want every day...sunny and warm with
lighter winds. Highs across south central Nebraska and north central
Kansas should reach the lower 80s. It should be a great day to do
just about anything outdoors.Tonight...an upper level weather system
will move east out of the four corners region and onto the
Plains...likely triggering showers and some thunderstorms across
western Kansas. Toward dawn Sunday...those showers and isolated
thunderstorms will spread northeast across north central Kansas and
into far southern Nebraska. Lows tonight will range from the upper
40s to upper 50s...as clouds thicken across the region. On
Sunday...you might want to remind mom to keep an umbrella handy...as
periods of showers and some thunderstorms work across the area from
west to east during the day. Mothers Day probably isnt a rain
out...but there will certainly be rain around much of the day. With
the rain and clouds...highs Sunday will slip back into the upper 60s
to the middle 70s.
