...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1895, an F5 tornado rumbled 22 miles from the
northwest corner of Sedgwick County to 6 miles northwest
of Newton.  The almost one mile wide vortex killed 8,
injured 25, and devastated 25 farms, a few of which
vanished.  Debris was carried for many miles and dead
livestock were found everywhere.  Four fatalities
occurred in each of 2 families who had hesitated to take
cover.It is possible they did not recognize the nearly
1 mile wide funnel as being a tornado.
