North-northeast 20-foot winds around 5 mph combine with minimum relative humidity from 25-30% this afternoon for the Brainerd Lakes to along the Iron Range and northwestward. Closer to Lake Superior, northeast winds around 10 mph gust to 20 mph, with higher minimum RH expected compared to further westward and inland. The strongest near-lake winds decrease in speed from early to mid-afternoon today. Surface high pressure and calm winds tonight across nearly all districts is expected to allow stout near-surface inversions to form and highly limit any smoke dispersal right after sunset today. Rain chances build Friday morning first in northeast Minnesota and then into northwest Wisconsin by mid-day Friday. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to form Friday afternoon, with isolated strong thunderstorms possible in the late afternoon to mid-evening hours Friday. Severe storms are not currently expected. Localized rainfall amounts of one to two tenths likely, but there are better chances of widespread rainfall being less than one tenth tomorrow. Generally dry weather likely Saturday ahead of the next round of thunderstorm chances for Sunday in far northeast Minnesota and across northwest Wisconsin.
