Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
321 PM HST Tue Apr 16 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Our typical trade wind weather will gradually make its return on
Wednesday as a ridge of high pressure builds north of the state.
Generally, the trade winds will remain at moderate speeds through
the weekend, with passing showers favoring the windward and mauka
area during the overnight and morning hours.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Latest satellite imagery shows afternoon clouds and a few light
showers over interior and mountain areas due to the development
of sea breezes. Most of the rainfall has been light this
afternoon, with the exception of a few moderate showers over the
windward slopes of the Big Island. These showers should taper off
this evening as the land cools and stabilizes the atmosphere.

Over on the summits of the Big Island, a subtropical jet moving
through the area is still causing strong winds. Winds have
weakened a touch during the day, thus the High Wind Warning was
downgraded to a Wind Advisory for the summits through tonight.
Winds are expected to continue to decrease and will likely drop
below advisory thresholds by Wednesday. Winds will likely increase
again Friday night, which may bring the return of advisory level
conditions on the summits.

Starting Wednesday, a ridge of high pressure will build north of
the region and our typical trade winds will make its return.
Bands of moisture will ride in with the trade winds from time to
time and will produce passing showers over windward areas through
rest of the week. Passing showers will be most active during the
early morning and overnight hours. Trade winds are expected to
hold at moderate speeds through the weekend.

.AVIATION...
Northerly flow is slowly filling in across the island chain this
afternoon. Winds will be light enough to allow for daytime sea
breezes and overnight land breezes in many areas. SHRA and brief
MVFR conds are possible windward and mauka locations. Otherwise
VFR conditions should prevail through the TAF period.

AIRMET Tango remains in effect for mod turb for the entire island
chain. This may need to be cancelled this evening as conds are
slowly improving.

&&

.MARINE...
Light to moderate northerlies will veer to the NE tonight through
Wednesday. Trades then persist well into next week, becoming
moderate to fresh by this weekend.

Surf along S facing shores came in notably higher than the modeled
guidance warranting a modest upward adjustment earlier today.
Small surf continues along S shores as a long period pulse
advances through area waters. NW swell maintaining moderate surf
along NW facing shores today will become increasingly N as it
gradually diminishes tonight through Wednesday. Surf along E
facing shores remains small through late week before trending up
slightly as trade strengthen late this week.
