.UPDATE...
Issued at 1011 AM CDT Tue Mar 26 2024

Surface observations and road cameras across majority of the area
have shown enough improvements to allow the winter weather advisory
to expire. However, locations along the Buffalo Ridge into northwest
Iowa have shown lingering snow showers and strong winds gusting
up to 45 MPH continuing difficult travel conditions. As winds
will be decreasing by the early afternoon hours, have extended
the winter weather advisory until 1 PM given the expected
impacts to travel.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 308 AM CDT Tue Mar 26 2024

Light snow continues across the region, mainly along and east
of the James River Valley. Northwest winds also remain quite
breezy, with gusts ranging between 35 to 45 MPH, resulting in
blowing snow across portions of our area. Will continue to see
snow gradually diminish from west to east in the coming hours,
with light snow still possible east of I-29 through late
morning. Additional snowfall accumulations after 7 AM should
remain less than half an inch. In regard to headlines, plan to
extend the Winter Weather Advisory across SW Minnesota, NW Iowa,
NE Nebraska, and portions of extreme SE South Dakota until 10
AM to account for slick roads and reduced visibilities. As noted
in days past, remember to proceed with caution if you must
commute! Otherwise, look for highs to rise into the 20s today
and lows to fall into the teens to single digits. Despite there
being calmer winds in place overnight, will still see wind chill
values plummet into the single digits to negative teens!

Quiet conditions return Wednesday as the upper level trough pushes
eastward toward the Great Lakes region. Sfc high pressure will slide
overhead during this time, allowing mostly sunny skies and light
winds to prevail through the afternoon. As alluded to in the
previous discussion, will likely see highs rise into the mid 20s to
lower 30s in areas that received a decent amount of snow, with mid
30s to low 40s possible in areas elsewhere. Highs warm even more
heading into the Thursday as upper level ridging builds across the
central CONUS, with temperatures ranging from the mid 30s to mid 50s.

Otherwise, expect upper level flow to turn more zonal heading into
the weekend. Will then see a few shortwaves take aim at the region,
causing precipitation chances to return to the forecast Friday and
Sunday. With temperatures in the 40s to 50s, would expect rain to be
the dominant p-type, but can`t rule out the possibility of seeing
some snow mix in during the evening hours as temperatures cool.
Attention then turns to a pronounced upper level trough and low
pressure over the western CONUS heading into the new week. That
being said, still have a decent amount of model disagreement
concerning the track of this system to place too much confidence
behind any one solution just yet. For now, would expected continued
chances for precipitation, with temperatures near seasonal
norms.
