...A WARM, DRY, AND TRANQUIL APRIL ACROSS SOUTHEAST ALASKA...
A frontal system with a relatively decent tropical moisture fetch
moved through the area around the 5th, bringing the most appreciable
rainfall to the Panhandle. On that day, Juneau Airport set a new
daily rainfall record with 0.77 inches, breaking their previous
record of 0.72 inches, which was set back in 1955. A few relatively
quick-moving and weak frontal systems gave light and short lived
rain events and post frontal showers, primarily during the first
third to half of the month. During that timeframe, Southeast Alaska
received the vast majority of its precipitation.
There was primarily blocking high pressure in place around our
region, dominating the weather for most of the month, giving
decreased clouds, drier weather, and increased daytime high
temperatures from all of the excessive sunshine, which made the
monthly average temperatures across the Panhandle a bit above normal.
On the 19th, both Sitka and Yakutat Airports set records for high
temperatures. Sitka`s new record is 65, breaking their old record of
61, set in 2021. Yakutat`s new record is 64, which broke their old
record of 60, also set in 2021. On the 20th, Ketchikan, Sitka, and
Yakutat Airports broke high temperature records. Ketchikan`s new
record is 65, breaking their old record of 64, which was set back in
1934. Yakutat`s new record is 61, which broke their old record of
58, set back in 1989. Sitka`s new record is 63, breaking their old
record of 61, which was set back in 1978.
Additionally, Juneau International Airport received 0.2 inches of
snow accumulation on the 1st of the month and several traces after
that, before mid-month, primarily from isolated to scattered post-
frontal nocturnal snow showers.
