Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
214 PM MDT Fri Apr 19 2024

.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Saturday
Quiet weather continues across the region this afternoon.
Satellite imagery shows just a few high clouds in place across
much of the region with a bit more in place over the higher
terrain. Nevertheless, things are quiet and will remain as such
the next few days. Hi-res CAMs show a very low probability once
again of maybe an isolated shower across the central mountains but
this appears to be too isolated to even mention in the forecast.
A warming trend is underway today with our valleys climbing into
the low to mid 50s this afternoon; 40s in the mountains. This
warming will continue into Saturday as 60s should return to
valleys with low to mid 50s in the higher terrain with more sun
than clouds expected. We`ll remain dry once again on Saturday.

.LONG TERM...Sun through next Fri night
Westerly flow aloft means mostly dry airflow, with some upslope
showers in the eastern highlands and upper Snake River highlands.
Mon is dry again, then low pressure moving in from the southwest
arrives sometime on Tue afternoon/Tue night. Cold core aloft with
this low is enough to generate showers and thunderstorms for Wed
through Thu afternoons. At this time, there is no strong front and
not expecting anything reaching severe conditions.

Cloud cover with the Tue/Tue night low means colder temperatures
after a weekend and Mon/Tue should see temperatures getting above
seasonal normals. By Fri, afternoon highs should be once again
below normal. Overnight lows above 5800ft should allow some light
snow.

Wind still expected to be a factor Sun afternoon and Sun night,
possibly to Wind Advisory levels. The Tue low also comes with strong
wind, likely just under Wind Advisory. Messick

.AVIATION...
Nearly zonal flow aloft is dry and it will be difficult at finding
any cloud cover. CIG and VSBY unlimited through the forecast
period. Clouds and showers limited to along ID-MT and ID- WY
border regions. Wind should be light, for little to no impact on
flight operations. Sun afternoon should be windier for KBYI, KPIH,
and KIDA, but still very little precipitation unless in the
eastern highlands. Messick

.HYDROLOGY...
Water levels on the Portneuf river continue to run high, just
below moderate flood stage for the Portneuf river in Pocatello.
The river forecast for the Portneuf river in Pocatello shows the
river running above flood stage for the foreseeable future. At
Topaz, levels remain and are forecast to remain very near minor
flood stage into next week. McKaughan
