Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

FORECAST VALID...Saturday 27 April 2024

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...Moderate to high.

SYNOPSIS...A large and deep low will linger over the Bering through
Friday before dropping into the Gulf. An additional low will develop
near Anadyr on Saturday. High pressure will remain over the high
Arctic through Saturday.

The main ice edge extends from near Cape Newenham to 57 39`N 159
13`W to 57 26`N 159 56`W to 56 43`N 164 36`W to 57 40`N 169 43`W to
59 51`N 174 55`W to 61 23`N 177 56`W and continues in Russian
waters. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Cape Newenham to 110 nm SW of Cape Newenham to 25 nm N of St
Paul to 115 nm NW of St Paul to 80 nm S of St Paul to 65 nm SW of St
Matthew to 270 nm SW of Gambell and continues in Russian waters. The
ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Winds will remain out of the north and west,
keeping the pack well established along the coast. Polynyas may open
up as ice shears against the coast, but should quickly refreeze.

confidence is high. Winds will remain out of the north and east, and
will increase in strength. This may open up Polynyas along western
facing shorelines.

FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence
is high. Along the ice edge, south and easterly winds in the first
half of the forecast period will push the pack north and west,
leading to a general retreat and compaction of the ice edge by 20 to
40 nm. Towards Saturday, light northerlies may bring some of the ice
back to the south, but winds will be lighter.

-COOK INLET-

PKZ740-Cook Inlet North of Kalgin Island-

FORECAST FOR COOK INLET (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence is
high. River ice may move south into upper Cook Inlet via the Knik
River. Otherwise, Cook Inlet is expected to remain largely sea ice
free.
