.UPDATE...
Issued at 301 AM CDT Fri Oct 9 2026

Another quiet night across the region with mostly clear skies
and steady southwest winds so far early this morning.
Thanks to the steady winds, overnight low temperatures continue
on the mild side, with most locations expected to bottom out in
the mid 50s to lower 60s, or about 10 to 15 degrees above
climatology for this date.

With a mild start to the day, expect temperatures to rapidly
rise by midday, with afternoon temperatures likely peaking out a
couple of degrees above yesterdays readings (based on similarly
clear skies and a 1-2C increase in 850mb temps). This should
put the tri-cities in near record territory by mid-afternoon,
with most locations topping out near or just above 90 degrees.
(Details for records the next couple of days are highlighted in
climate section below).

Expect a near rinse and repeat of temps/weather to start the
weekend, with a few clouds creeping into the picture by Sunday
afternoon, which could help hold down afternoon temperatures a
couple of degrees from the prior days readings. In addition,
expect breezy afternoons through Sunday, with afternoon wind
gusts of 30 to 40 MPH likely across the area.

Changes will be in store for the local area by the middle of
next week as a cold front is expected to cross the area late in
the day Monday, and model signals are increasingly in agreement
for a good chance of precip returning mid-week.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 305 PM CDT Thu Oct 8 2026

This Afternoon-Tonight...

Temperatures this afternoon are currently sitting in the mid 80s-low
90s, under mostly sunny skies. Winds are generally light with
gusts around 15mph or less. Aloft, the area is under
northwesterly flow with ridging over the western U.S. and
troughing over the northeastern U.S. Lows tonight will be in the
50s to low 60s.

Friday...

Another well above normal day is expected across the area on Friday,
with highs climbing into the mid-upper 80s (normal highs upper 60s-
low 70s). Southwesterly winds will be breezy throughout the late
morning-early evening, gusting 20-30 mph. Outside of a few passing
cirrus clouds, sunny skies are expected, resulting in a pleasant
(but breezy) end to the school week.

This weekend...

Northwesterly flow aloft transitions to southwesterly flow this
weekend as troughing develops over the west coast. Seasonably warm
weather continues on Saturday with highs in the mid-upper 80s. A
tightening pressure gradient over the plains results in a windy day
on Saturday. Southerly winds of 15-25 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph
are expected during the daytime hours though an isolate/occasional
gust over 40 mph can`t be ruled out. Warm and breezy weather
continues on Sunday with highs once again climbing into the
80s. A passing disturbance pushes a cold front into the area
Sunday evening/night though precipitation is not expected with
this frontal passage.

Next Week...

Southwesterly flow aloft remains in place through the end of the
forecast period. Under this flow rainfall chances to the area as
disturbances move through the area. The most substantial chance
looks to be Tuesday night-Wednesday as a more robust trough lifts
across the Plains. There remains plenty of spread in model guidance
on the exact track of the low/trough and resulting impacts. 12z
ensemble/deterministic guidance hints at the potential for the
area to be in the "dry slot" of the low, with rain falling
mainly north/east of the forecast area. This system will
continue to be monitored closely over the coming days. Highs
will generally be seasonable-seasonably warm, though the exact
track of the aforementioned system will impact how warm/cool
each day gets.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z SATURDAY/...
Issued at 639 AM CDT Fri Oct 9 2026

For KGRI/KEAR Airports:

Dry, VFR conditions are expected through the TAF period. Skies
will remain mostly clear, with some upper-level cirrus clouds
overhead. Light, generally WSW winds will increase to 12-15kt
and become more SSW this afternoon, with wind gusts of 20-22kt
possible. A brief break in surface wind gusts may be possible
late this afternoon/early evening, before gusty surface winds
return. A developing southwesterly low-level jet atop these
gusty surface winds will bring about low-level wind shear in
the lowest 1,000ft tonight.
