Expect a strong southward flowing longshore current and strong structural currents near piers, particularly on the north side. Strong rip currents are also possible within sandbars. * WHERE...Southern Berrien county. * WHEN...From 2 PM EDT this afternoon through Saturday morning. * IMPACTS...Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers. * ADDITIONAL INFORMATION...There is a moderate swim risk for Saturday. Breaking waves of 1 to 3 feet and currents are expected. The worst conditions today and Saturday will be further south in the county, particularly near New Buffalo, MI. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Do not venture out on piers. A longshore current is a lake current that moves parallel to shore. Longshore currents can be strong enough to prevent swimmers from being able to keep their feet on the bottom... making it difficult to return to shore. Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from the shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water. && $$
