...Flooding Possible Tonight and Thursday Morning...

.A strong low pressure system over the Ohio Valley will move east
today and will push a cold front through the Mid Atlantic region
on Thursday. This system will produce widespread moderate to heavy
rainfall tonight into Thursday morning.

...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY
MORNING...

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flood Watch for portions of North Carolina and Virginia,
  including the following areas, in North Carolina, Alleghany
  NC, Ashe, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin. In
  Virginia, Alleghany VA, Amherst, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt,
  Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Grayson, Henry, Montgomery,
  Patrick, Pulaski, Roanoke, Rockbridge, and Wythe.

* From this evening through Thursday morning

* 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected. The highest amounts will be
  along the Blue Ridge. Much of the expected rainfall will runoff
  into local streams and creeks since the ground is frozen or
  still saturated from rainfall last weekend.

* Small streams and creeks may overflow their banks. Areas of poor
  drainage will also be prone to flooding. Roads near streams and
  creeks.

 Tributaries of the Roanoke and Dan Rivers may also flood. These
 rivers may rise above action or flood stage Thursday or Friday.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

...Light icing or light wintry mix possible late tonight into
early Wednesday morning...

.Light precipitation will spread across the region from southwest
to northeast starting late tonight. This precipitation will likely
fall as a wintry mix across parts of northwest North Carolina and
southwest Virginia, with a greater focus on freezing rain over
the western Piedmont of Virginia and North Carolina. This will
cause slick spots on untreated roads, parking lots, and sidewalks
during the morning commute. As temperatures warm throughout
Wednesday morning, the entire area is expected to transition to a
plain rain by mid-day.

* WHAT...Freezing rain expected with total ice accumulations of a
  light glaze.

* WHERE...Most of northwest North Carolina, up into portions of
  the foothills and piedmont of Virginia.

* WHEN...Until noon EST Wednesday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The hazardous conditions could impact the
  morning commute.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of freezing rain
will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads. Slow down
and use caution while driving.
