Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through this evening. Some thunderstorms may become severe, especially this afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat (a few of which could approach 70 mph). Large hail and a tornado or two are also possible. In addition, very heavy rain could result in a few instances of flash flooding. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday Severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are possible Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Code ORANGE Air Quality Alert Saturday for Northern Virginia. Concentrations of fine particulate matter due to wildfire smoke will persist at levels consistent with an Air Quality Index of Unhealthy (Red Alert) to Very Unhealthy (Purple Alert) Friday night into Saturday morning. Air quality begins to improve Saturday afternoon. Code Purple and Code Red Air Quality Alerts mean that air pollution concentrations within the region are unhealthy to very unhealthy for the general population. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.
