This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for west central Minnesota,
central South Dakota, north central South Dakota and northeast
South Dakota.
.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.
A powerful winter storm is generating freezing drizzle for portions
of north central and northeast South Dakota this morning, and light
ice will only expand though the course of the morning. A shift to
snow is expected later this morning in western South Dakota with a
transition east. Expect a band of heavy snow that will pivot through
central South Dakota with snow accumulating at a rate of an inch or
two per hour. In Watertown and the surrounding area, freezing drizzle
will become freezing rain with upwards of a quarter inch
accumulation though early afternoon before finally changing over to
snow. Winds will continue to be on the increase as well, with gusts
peaking between 45 and 55 mph this afternoon and evening. As we
transition to snow, we will also transition to blizzard conditions.
We will see improving conditions from west to east late this
afternoon into the early overnight hours, with light winds and dry
conditions Saturday.
.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.
Another powerful winter storm is poised to impact the region Tuesday
and Wednesday of next week. Strong winds and heavy snow will
accompany the system.
