...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER TODAY FOR PORTIONS OF WESTERN MARYLAND,
NORTHERN VIRGINIA, AND PORTIONS OF CENTRAL VA JUST EAST OF THE
BLUE RIDGE...

The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 9 to 11 percent,
relative humidities around 30 to 35 percent, wind gusts around
20-30 mph, and high temperatures in the low 70s will lead to an
increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any
equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry
grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could
easily ignite and spread fire quickly.

Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about
wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and
education, please visit your state forestry on environmental
protection website.

...INCREASED FIRE DANGER IN EFFECT TODAY FROM 11 AM UNTIL 6 PM...

Although recent rains have led to some increased soil moisture,
abnormally dry conditions are still present over portions of the
Piedmont. With the combination of low relative humidity dropping
into the 30 to 35 percent range and gusty southwest winds of 20
to 30 mph, an Increased Fire Danger statement has been issued for
the Piedmont. This is in effect today from 11 am to 6 pm. These
weather conditions will result in elevated fire potential and a
threat of adverse fire behavior.

Please consult your local burn permitting authorities as to whether
burning is allowed today. If you must burn, use extreme caution,
as fires can spread rapidly under these conditions.
