A National Weather Service storm survey team determined that
straight line winds associated with a line of severe thunderstorms
was responsible for the extensive tree damage that occurred in
western Lancaster County Sunday evening. Maximum wind gusts were
estimated to be around 70 to 85 mph. The straight line wind
damage began in eastern Chester County.

In Lancaster County, the more substantial damage occurred in the
western part of the county, from just southwest of Lancaster down
through the Irwin, Bell Town, and Blakely Crossroads areas.
Numerous large hardwood trees were uprooted and many large
branches snapped and power lines downed, with the most significant
damage in Irwin and and along Highway 200 south through the
county border. The county Emergency Manager reported one indirect
injury when a person drove into a downed tree on Highway 97 near
Ember Lane.
