AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
435 AM PDT Mon Jun 10 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Interior high temperatures will warm up today. Dry
and hot weather expected to continue into mid week. Temperatures
will then diminish toward the end of the week. Stratus will cover
coastal areas for the next several days with clearing expected
each afternoon. Locally strong northerly winds expected over the
exposed coastal mountains and headlands.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Broad and flat 500mb ridging will build over the
area from the west today providing much warmer max temperatures
for the interior. Marine air and stratus intrusion will substantially
offset the warming potential for the coastal valleys of Humboldt
and Del Norte, but it will still warm to the upper 70s to mid
80s. Temperatures for the warmest valleys of interior Mendocino,
Trinty and Lake will most likely peak in the mid to upper 90s.

National Blend of Models (NBM) remains consistent with temperatures
edging up a few more degrees on Tuesday with localized major heat
risk for portions of eastern Lake county. A heat advisory has
been issued for Tuesday when afternoon high temperature are projected
to peak around 100-103F. Those without effective cooling and/or
adequate hydration will be at the greatest risk. It will remain
hot with low humidities on Wednesday for eastern Trinity, interior
Mendocino and Lake.

NBM continues to indicate high temperatures generally trending
downward toward normal (83-87F) late in the week and over the
weekend as another 500mb trough approaches the Pacific NW.
Uncertainty with the magnitude and rate of "cooling" increases
this weekend. Probability for 90F or more is around 30-50% for
valleys of Lake, southern/eastern Mendocino and central/eastern
Trinity. At this point and based on the NBM, rain from this
trough is highly improbable. NBM probabilities for 0.10in or more
in 24 hours are no more than 10% for Del Norte county by late in
the weekend or 5 PM Sunday. DB

&&

.AVIATION...Stratus has returned to the coastal terminals this
morning, producing IFR ceilings and brief visibility impacts.
Daytime heating will slowly lift ceilings and mix out low clouds,
but the depth of the marine layer (about 2000 ft) could keep
stubborn low ceilings well into the afternoon. VFR conditions will
also be brief, as stratus looks likely to return this evening to
both coastal terminals. UKI will remain VFR through the day with
clear skies and afternoon breezes. JB

&&

.MARINE...Gusty northerlies continue south of Cape Mendocino early
this morning, with gale to near gale force winds gusts being
observed by Point Arena. Gale force gusts are expected to become
more localized to the expansion fan south of Cape Mendocino today.
Outside the expansion fan, northerly breezes will increase to 20 to
25 knot gusts this afternoon, before subsiding after sunset. Steep
waves of up to 11 feet will diminish today, especially north of
Cape Mendocino. Winds will subside slightly Tuesday morning,
before ramping up Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Gale force
gusts look likely in the outer waters with steep, hazardous seas
of up to 15 feet possible Wednesday and Thursday. JB
