AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
430 AM PDT Sun Jun 9 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will remain seasonable through the weekend
with increasing marine influence near the coast. A moderate heat
wave will build early next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A 500mb trough will move over the area today and
high temperatures in the interior will trend down a few more
degrees compared to yesterday. High temperatures generally in the
mid to upper 80s are forecast. This is close to seasonal normals.
The bulk of the high clouds that this trough has been generating
will exist the area by daybreak. Low clouds along the North Coast
and adjacent river valleys will scour out this afternoon as
northwesterly breezes increase.

National blend of models continue to show temperatures warming up
early to mid next week (Mon-Wed) as a broad flat 500mb ridge and
above normal 500mb heights extends into NW California from the
west. Interior highs in the mid 90`s to around 100F are forecast
to return to mostly Trinity, Lake, interior Mendocino and NE
Humboldt. The heat is forecast to peak on Tuesday with locally
major heat risk in Lake County. Another trough in westerly flow
will knock down the ridge toward the latter portion of the week;
Thu-Sat and high temperatures will once again trend down to
around seasonal averages. Chance for any rain toward the end of
the week or next weekend is quite low, less than 10% near the
Oregon border. DB

&&

.AVIATION...Ceilings at the coastal terminals are largely MVFR
early this morning, and conditions are expected to improve to VFR
after sunrise. North-northwesterly winds will be gusty at the coast
this afternoon, especially at CEC, before diminishing after sunset.
Some low clouds are likely to reform tonight, with the highest
confidence around Humboldt Bay. There is lower confidence of
cloudiness for the Del Norte coast, with a trough likely to weaken
the marine inversion and stratus potential. The possibility of a
southerly surge from Humboldt Bay is not out of the question early
Monday morning. UKI is forecast to remain VFR today with gusty
northwest in the afternoon up to 20 knots. JB

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds will continue to be breezy in the outer
waters and in the expansion fan south of Cape Mendocino. Windy areas
continue to have steep wind waves of around 6 to 8 feet at 6 to 7
seconds. A mid-period westerly swell has begun to fill early this
morning at around 6 to 7 feet at 14 seconds. Northerly wind waves
will increase today bringing steep seas across most the waters. The
strongest winds and steepest waves will be in the expansion fan
south of Cape Mendocino and locally off of Pt St George. These will
persist, though lull slightly into Monday afternoon.

Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning, winds are forecast to ramp
up to more widespread gale force gusts across the outer waters and
gradually building steep seas with it. Another relatively minor mid-
period northwest swell will fill in Tuesday. Wave heights continue
to increase further into the week, with significant wave heights up
to 15 feet in the outer waters possible by Thursday. JB
