Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
439 AM CDT Wed Jun 5 2024

.DISCUSSION...

A couple rounds of light precipitation possible today. The first
this morning from west to east for areas north of I-90 where some
sprinkles may occur, with the second this afternoon for areas east
of I-29 where showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm are
possible. Not expecting much accumulation with either round,
possibly up to a tenth. The more significant impacts today will
come from very breezy west-northwest winds, which are expected to
be gusting 40 to 50 mph throughout the afternoon hours. With
minimum relative humidity values from the mid/upper 20s to upper
30s, elevated fire conditions are possible, though given the
current status of the grasslands overall fire danger will remain
low. Thursday will again see breezy northwesterly winds, with
gusts up to 40 mph expected.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
