.KEY MESSAGES...

- Cooler highs in the upper 60s to 70s Saturday through Monday,
  with chances for showers and a few thunderstorms. The better
  chances will reside over the western half of the forecast
  area.

- Drier weather with much warmer temperatures developing Tuesday
  into Wednesday and persisting through Friday.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...

The main frontal boundary today will reside near the Kansas and
Oklahoma border, back to along the Colorado and Wyoming Front
Range today. Weak surface high pressure will extend across the
Northern Plains and western Great Lakes. This will bring mainly
cloudy skies and cool highs today near 70, to near 75 far
southwest. The flow aloft will be west northwest with a few
disturbances crossing the region today into tonight. An areas of
showers and a few thunderstorms have developed early this
morning across portions of the western and central panhandle.
The latest mesoscale models bring this activity eastward today
with 20 to 40 POPs mainly across the Sandhills. Storms
developing across far southeast Wyoming and northeast Colorado
this afternoon will bring higher chances for showers and a few
thunderstorms to southwest Nebraska late afternoon to early
evening, with 40 to 60 POPs. Models differ on location and QPFs,
with confidence below average on coverage.

Tonight, shower chances persist overnight, mainly across the
northwest Sandhills. Lows from 50 to 55.

On Sunday, upper ridging will build across the Great Basin as a
closed low and upper trough remain across the eastern Great
Lakes and New England. The atmosphere will remain fairly moist
with surface winds southeast. Looks to be a mainly dry day,
with just low chances for showers across the western Sandhills.
Highs will again be cool from 70 to 75.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

On Monday, an upper trough will begin to move into the Northern
and Central Plains. This will bring a weak front into the
northwest Sandhills with a chance for showers and thunderstorms
to the northwest Sandhills by late afternoon. Highs will warm
into the upper 70s with a breezy south wind.

As the upper trough and weak front move across Monday night,
likely POPs for much of the north central with a chance further
south. While general thunderstorms are most likely, a few
strong storms are possible across the western Sandhills Monday
evening.

A warming trend begins Tuesday into Wednesday and persists
through Friday. The upper flow remains fairly zonal, with upper
ridging shown by Friday as an upper trough moves into the West
Coast. Mainly dry Tuesday through Thursday, with low POPs
arriving Thursday night into Friday. Highs will peak into the
upper 80s Wednesday and Thursday, with even some low 90s
Southwest.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SUNDAY/...

Areas of low MVFR and possible IFR ceilings are expected to
develop across portions of southwest into central Nebraska this
morning. These will linger until mid-morning and then should
lift. VFR conditions are expected to prevail from late morning
through the afternoon hours under overcast ceilings around
3500 FT or higher. Winds will become east at 10-15 kts by this
afternoon.
