038 FXUS65 KLKN 172020 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 120 PM PDT Fri May 17 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Dry weather continues over the weekend with a chance of thunderstorms returning over the weekend and into early next week as an upper level trough moves in over the state from the northwest. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday Dry weather expected to continue tonight with lows in the dropping into the 30s for northeast Nevada as a cold front is expected to move in from an upper level trough coming from the northwest. 40s and 50s everywhere else. Saturday, dry but cooler weather is expected to continue for northern Nevada with highs in the low 70s, with westerly winds expected to increase to 15-20 mph, gusts as high as 25-30 mph. A chance for isolated thunderstorms is expected for N. Nye and White Pine Counties in the afternoon with the potential that some of these thunderstorms could end up as dry thunderstorms with precipitation expected to be less than a tenth of an inch. Winds for central Nevada expected to reach up to 10-15 mph from the west. .LONG TERM...Sunday through next Thursday. An upper trough is expected to move into the area from the north on Sunday and Monday. This will bring another breezy to locally windy day across the area with wind gusts to 30 mph during the afternoon. Isolated showers are expected to develop across eastern Nevada during the day though accumulations are going to be light. Highs for the afternoon period will be in the 60s and 70s, though some of the warmer locations in central Nevada could see temperatures near 80s degrees. Look for leftover, isolated showers to continue across east-central Nevada during the overnight, with other locations expected to remain dry. Overnight lows will dip into the 30s. On Monday the trough will continue its trek across northeast Nevada with a northwest flow on Tuesday. Temperatures during the afternoon will remain on the cool side with readings in the 60s on Monday and 60s to near 70 on Tuesday. Lows will be in the 20s and 30s. Precipitation on both days are expected to be rather isolated to scattered with amounts less than 0.05" on both days. Winds will be out of the north and northwest and breezy with gusts of 25 to 30 mph on Monday and 20 to 25 mph for Tuesday afternoon. There exists another possibility for light showers Wednesday and Thursday mainly across northern Nevada. Temperatures will moderate somewhat with readings in the 60s and lows in the 30s. Overnight lows will be in the 30s and 40s. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions under mostly clear skies are expected for the next 24 hours. W-NW10-20G25-30KT are expected to develop after 18Z/18. ISOLD VCTS possible across central TAF sites of KELY and KTPH with erratic gusty winds to 35KT. && .FIRE WEATHER...A dry cold front moving over the state continues to head southeast tonight bringing in cooler temperatures and gusty northwesterly winds Saturday afternoon. Chances for isolated dry thunderstorms expected Saturday afternoon. && .HYDROLOGY...Above normal temperatures continue to enhance melting of the remaining high mountain snowpack, which will in turn result in elevated and at times increasing flows on streams and creeks coming off snow covered higher terrain. The Bruneau River, Owyhee River at Mountain City, Wildhorse Reservoir, and the Jarbidge River near Jarbidge are all currently in action stage, and are expected to remain elevated over the coming days. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
