Fire Weather Planning Forecast FOR S Cntrl and Sern Colorado
National Weather Service Pueblo Co
354 AM MDT Tue May 21 2024

.Discussion...

A upper level trough moving overhead later today will create some
stronger and gusty southwesterly winds across most of the district
out of the southwest to westerly direction. The airmass is more
modified with higher RH values yesterday. Because fuels are still
critical for lower elevations (below 7500 ft) in vicinity of the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains and within the Wet Mountain Valley, these
areas will be susceptible to some spotty critical fire weather
conditions by later this afternoon and through the early evening,
although this is not anticipated to be widespread and very marginal.
Scattered shower and thunderstorms will develop by later in the day,
initially over the mountains and then move off into the plains by
later in the afternoon and through the evening. These will be mainly
north of Highway 50. There is low confidence that storms will become
stronger or possibly severe. The area most likely for this to occur
would be over the Ramparts and Pikes Peak Region. If this does
occur, there may be some hail of possibly an inch in diameter, as
well as some gusty outflow winds up to 60 mph. Higher elevation snow
will result in additional snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches for the
Sawatch Range and northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with lesser
amounts expected across the rest of the higher elevations through
tonight.

A few snow showers across the highest elevations and chances of
thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening will continue to be
possible across the eastern mountains and along the I-25 corridor
tomorrow, and then mainly north of Highway 50, from Thursday through
Monday. Otherwise, most of the southern half of the district will
remain dry through next week. There could be critical fire weather
conditions again for lower elevations (below 7500 ft) in vicinity of
the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and within the Wet Mountain Valley on
Thursday during the afternoon and early evening.

Smoke dispersion will become Very Good to Excellent across the
district by later this morning, then become Poor by later this
evening and through tonight, and then will return to being generally
Very Good to Excellent again tomorrow.
