276 FXUS65 KVEF 010845 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 145 AM PDT Sat Jun 1 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Broad area of low pressure across the region will aid in the development of gusty south to southwest winds today and Sunday. By the middle of next week, expect well above-average temperatures for the first full week of Meteorological Summer. && .DISCUSSION...Today through next Friday. Skies are clear across the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert early this morning. Leading edge of one shortwave trough can be seen moving into western Washington. This system will aid in the development of stronger south to southwest winds today and tomorrow and actually trim a few degrees off our temperatures. There is a stronger shortwave trough that reaches western Washington early Monday morning. For early June, this wave is associated with an impressive atmospheric river which will bring heavy rain to western Oregon and Washington. For our area, all that moisture will only translate to an extensive area of cloud cover sagging south over the area Monday afternoon and Monday night. The cloud cover will begin to thin out Tuesday as high pressure starts building in from the west. First crack at excessively hot temperatures for the region comes Wednesday and Thursday as heights continue to rise across the Intermountain West. High temperatures will be running around 10 degrees above normal, and will be at or close to records. As the heat builds, especially in urban areas there will be little relief during the overnights. Latest temperature probability data has a 38% chance of Las Vegas hitting 110 degrees Thursday. The earliest date Las Vegas has hit 110 degrees is June 6th. Major HeatRisk on Wednesday is not as widespread as Thursday, while some areas of the Las Vegas Valley and Death Valley NP increase into the Extreme HeatRisk category Thursday. Am going to issue an Excessive Heat Watch for Wednesday and Thursday. Less confidence in just how hot temperatures will by on Friday. The closed low in the vicinity of the Baja Peninsula is forecast to start lifting north into southern California. More cloud cover and a low probability of thunderstorms over the higher terrain may just be enough to start suppressing the temperatures. && .FIRE WEATHER...Gusty south to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph will occur across the area today, on Sunday expect slightly weaker winds. An area of extensive clouds will work south across the area Monday before starting to thin on Tuesday. Hot conditions will occur Wednesday and Thursday && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light and variable winds this morning should quickly come around to south-southwest (170-210) by 18Z and remain in that general direction into tonight. Sustained wind speeds will increase to above 10kts once the switch to the south occurs, and occasional gusts to 25kts will be possible into the evening. Speeds will gradually diminish after sunset, but occasional gusts to 20kts will remain possible through midnight. Similar conditions are likely on Sunday, with light and erratic winds through the morning, followed by breezy southerly winds in the afternoon. VFR conditions will prevail through Sunday with no operationally significant clouds or weather expected. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Winds across most of the region will favor south to southwest directions today, with gusts to around 20kts possible during the afternoon and early evening. Winds in the Owens Valley, including KBIH, will differ from this with directions remaining northerly into the afternoon before turning westerly for a few hours after 23Z. Winds will also be stronger at KDAG, with gusts to 30kts likely after 00Z and persisting into Sunday morning. Similar conditions are expected at area TAF sites on Sunday. VFR conditions will prevail through Sunday with no operationally significant clouds or weather expected. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && $$ DISCUSSION...Pierce AVIATION...Planz For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
