Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
401 AM CDT Thu Jun 13 2024

Today:

A bit of active weather to start the day, with a few isolated storms
over eastern Iowa producing plentiful lightning and heavier rain as
they track east/southeast. Otherwise the majority of the state remains
dry this morning under clear skies, with very warm overnight
temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s north and in the mid to upper
70s south and light south/southwest winds.

Dry conditions for most areas are expected for the remainder of the
morning, with remaining storms exiting the state early on, though
additional showers and non-severe storms may bleed into northern Iowa
in the mid to late morning hours. However, the attention turns to
later this afternoon to evening when the frontal boundary pushes
across the state, bringing returning chances for possible strong to
severe storms, especially over southern and eastern Iowa. Damaging
winds and large, possibly significant hail are the main threats,
though a few tornadoes are possible as well. High temperatures will be
quite warm as well, with values through the 80s and into the mid 90s,
paired with heat indices in the upper 90s south.

Tonight and beyond:

A few lingering strong to severe storms are possible far south, before
gradually clearing. Overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s are
expected, with light winds.

Dry and quiet weather is expected Friday, with slightly cooler
temperatures through the 80s. On and off shower and storm chances
return throughout the weekend and into early next week, with some
potential for strong to severe storms at times. Hot temperatures are
forecast Sunday through much of next week, with values largely into
the low to mid 90s.
