766 FXUS62 KKEY 291243 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 843 AM EDT Wed May 29 2024 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 840 AM EDT Wed May 29 2024 The 12z sounding at KEY sampled quasi-steady geopotential heights extending from the lower troposphere up to the 500 mb isobaric surface. The sounding also sampled light and variable mean steering flow, coupled with a moist layer up to around 850 mb, and formidable dry air aloft. KBYX radar is detecting a few waxing and waning showers north of the Middle and Upper Keys, which will likely fizzle out over the next couple of hours. For the rest of today, any further shower activity will likely be driven by mesoscale dynamics, including possible island cumulus cloud line formation. However, given the aforementioned dry air aloft, any isolated shower development will likely be short-lived and shallow. Most island communities will stay dry, allowing temperatures to soar to near 90F yet again today. Coupled with dew points in the mid to upper 70s, heat indices will likely top out in the low 100s for much of the afternoon at many communities. No changes proposed for this morning update iteration. && .MARINE... Issued at 840 AM EDT Wed May 29 2024 There are currently no watches, warnings, or advisories in effect across the Florida Keys. Light to gentle, generally variable breezes are expected through Thursday. High pressure currently over south- central Canada will emerge off the Mid-Atlantic coast by the end of the work week. This will result in fresh northeast to east breezes beginning as early as Friday night, lasting through early next week. Small Craft Advisories may be required for portions or all of the Florida Keys marine zones over the weekend. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 840 AM EDT Wed May 29 2024 VFR conditions will prevail at both EYW and MTH terminals through the TAF period. Near surface winds will be light and variable. && .CLIMATE... May temperature records for Marathon date back to 1951. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
