Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
242 AM PDT Tue May 28 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A weather disturbance and cold front will bring
scattered showers and isolated dry thunderstorms to portions of
northeastern Nevada today and through this evening. Limited
rainfall and gusty winds are expected with the showers and
thunderstorms with an overall modest southwest wind today. Showers
and thunderstorms move into far eastern Nevada Wednesday with
considerably cooler high temperatures in the 70s across much of
central and northern Nevada. A warming trend under high pressure
and dry conditions are expected for the latter part of the week.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night.

An upper trough over the western U.S. along with a cold front will
bring showers and thunderstorms to portions of northern and
northeastern Nevada today. Overall atmospheric moisture remains
limited so many showers/thunderstorms will not produce a wetting
rain. The highest chances for a wetting rainfall exist in the
Ruby mountains and northern Elko county today at around 20%. Some
dry thunderstorms are expected as well. Winds will be out of the
southwest at 10-20 mph with high temperatures in the lower 80s in
valleys. A few showers will linger into the overnight hours
across northern Elko county but overall intensity should wane as
the night progresses.

Showers and thunderstorms will move into far eastern Nevada
Wednesday with gusty post-frontal winds from the northwest in
place across much of the state. Temperatures will be considerably
cooler across northern Nevada with highs only in the 60s and 70s
with a few 80s remaining across northern Nye County. Similarly,
WEdnesday night lows are expected to be quite cold, in the lower
30s across northern Elko county with mid 30s farther south into
Central Nevada.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday.

Dry conditions expected across the region as the flow becomes
more quasi-zonal towards the end of the week and through the
weekend. High temperatures gradually warm in the upper 70s into
the mid 80s with overnight lows in the 30s and 40s. Winds will be
breezy each afternoon out of the west-northwest. A weak upper
level disturbance may bring a 10% chance of light showers across
far northern and northeastern Nevada Monday afternoon. Otherwise,
quiet and dry conditions continue through early next week.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions at all terminals over the next 24
hours. Mostly sunny this morning becoming mostly cloudy this
afternoon and evening due to convective cloud build-ups. There
will be a 10-15% chance of thunderstorms at KEKO KTPH and KBAM
this afternoon, and a 5% chance of TS in the vicinity of KWMC and
KELY.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Flows on many small creeks and streams remain
elevated. The lower Humboldt continues to run strong with Battle
Mountain currently in action stage and Comus forecast to enter
action stage later this morning.

Wildhorse Reservoir resides in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next several days.

Humboldt River at Battle Mountain remains in action stage and is
forecast to slowly fall below action stage later today.
