878 FXUS63 KUNR 050442 AFDUNR Area Forecast Discussion For Western SD and Northeastern WY National Weather Service Rapid City SD 1042 PM MDT Tue Jun 4 2024 .KEY MESSAGES... - Strong west to northwest winds likely on Wednesday across northwest into portions of west-central South Dakota. - Warm weather expected through the weekend with chances for showers and storms returning by the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...(This Afternoon Through Monday) Issued at 215 PM MDT Tue Jun 4 2024 Water vapor shows upper low over southern SASK with trof extending southward through the Plains. Upper ridge covers the southwestern CONUS with mainly zonal flow to slight ridging over the northwest CONUS. At the surface, high is building into western SD with gusty northwest winds. Rain showers are slowly dissipating across south-central SD with clearing skies over our western 2/3rds of zones. Winds will decrease across the area this evening with cool conditions expected overnight. Winds will increase again Wednesday morning as another short wave rotates around the aforementioned low over southern Canada, with a few light showers possible in the morning across northwest SD. Advisory level winds are expected across northwest and west-central SD with some lower end warning winds closer to the ND border. Highs Wednesday in the 70s to near 80. Upper ridge will amplify over the western CONUS for the end of the work week, with dry conditions and temps near to slightly above average. The upper ridge will flatten over the weekend with a slightly more unsettled pattern developing across the northern tier over the weekend into early next week. Cooler air may filter back in for early next week as an upper low drops southeast across Canada and into the Upper Midwest. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS Through 06Z Wednesday Night) Issued At 1042 PM MDT Tue Jun 4 2024 Isolated rain showers are possible late tonight across northwest South Dakota as a cold front crosses the area.
