Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
435 AM CST Mon Dec 8 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Temperatures are expected to climb up above the freezing mark today
and Tuesday, allowing for some snow to melt, or at the very least,
crust over across central and north central South Dakota. After some
freezing rain and rain chances on Tuesday, strong northwest winds
across central and north central South Dakota in excess of 35 mph
including gusts in excess of 60 mph will be possible Tuesday
afternoon, persisting through Tuesday night. If enough snow melts
across central South Dakota today and Tuesday to uncover bare
ground, then the strong northwest winds and temperatures in the 40s
and 50s would create a high Grassland Fire Danger index across
Stanley, Jones and Lyman counties.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
