Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Juneau AK
313 PM AKDT Mon Jun 10 2024

.SHORT TERM.../ Through Tuesday night / Weather front moving
through Southeast Alaska through the first half of tonight period.
shower activity continued into early Tuesday and will diminish to
chance levels for the northern by afternoon. A secondary system
trailing will move a low to southern Haida Gwaii by Tuesday
afternoon. As a result of that, there will be some wind shifts
because of low, the biggest thing will be a north to northeast
flow for the southern panhandle too. The rain shield from the
Tuesday low will be spreading to the southern third.

.LONG TERM...For the start of the long term, we will remain in
unsettled weather as low pressure remains over the gulf. A ridge
of high pressure will remain over the panhandle during this time
which will allow for some clearing skies. With this, expect
showers to continue during this time allowing for some clearing
conditions but also the potential for rain. As we move towards the
latter half of the week, the low that remains over the gulf is
expected to shift to the south and east out of the area allowing
for high pressure to build in. One thing that will need to be
watched is the potential for some easterly wave thunderstorms
starting Thursday evening and potentially through Saturday. This
will have to be watched for the potential. For the going forecast,
decreased the winds across the inner channels and across the gulf
coast.

&&

.AVIATION...Frontal trough tracking northward across the region
has brought some SE gusts of 20-25kts and periodic MVFR CIG/VIS,
but otherwise the rain has been on the light side. Behind the
trough, breaks can be seen in the clouds offshore of POW and
expect a shortlived wind shift to the SW along with a transition
to showers. By the time the back edge of the trough is moving
through the northern panhandle Monday evening, the influence of
the next system will start affecting the south. Low pressure
tracking northward toward Haida Gwaii through Tuesday will cause
winds to shift back out of the N-NE. The offshore flow will in
turn cause more breaks in the clouds over the central and
northern inner channels for Tuesday.
