Confidence is growing for the potential of significant accumulating snow over the weekend. Specifically over parts of far northern panhandle, with minor accumulations in the Icy Strait corridor. This is due to a strong system that moves into the panhandle Saturday night. As this system moves northward, a rain/snow mix will initially be possible for parts of the Icy Strait corridor, ranging from Pelican to Juneau. There is possibility of minor snow accumulations in these locations, but any accumulation is likely to be less than one inch. Significantly more snow is expected for the far northern panhandle, with confidence increasing for accumulating snow late Saturday night through Sunday. In particular, the Klondike Highway could receive between 7 to 15 inches of new snow. The Haines Highway may also receive appreciable accumulating snow, but confidence is lower due to warmer temperatures. Minor snow accumulation is possible for Haines and Skagway into Sunday morning, but confidence is low due to temperatures being warm near sea level limiting any accumulation. Additionally, gusty winds and periods of moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across the northern panhandle Saturday night into Sunday. $$ AKZ323-326>332-080000- City and Borough of Sitka-Petersburg Borough- Western Kupreanof Island and Kuiu Island-Prince of Wales Island- City and Borough of Wrangell-Ketchikan Gateway Borough- City of Hyder-Annette Island- Including the cities of Sitka, Petersburg, Kake, Port Alexander, Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Coffman Cove, Thorne Bay, Wrangell, Ketchikan, Hyder, and Metlakatla 936 PM AKST Thu Nov 6 2025 ...HIGH WIND AND HEAVY RAIN FOR THE WEEKEND... Heavy rain returns to the southern and central panhandle over the weekend as a strong plume of moisture, associated with a low pressure system, move north. This system reaches the panhandle Saturday afternoon and continues to bring times of heavy precipitation through Sunday. The heaviest rainfall rates are most likely to occur over the far southern panhandle between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Rain amounts between 2 to 5 inches are expected. Isolated higher amounts are possible in areas of elevated terrain. Precipitation amounts currently look to be between a 2 to 5 year return interval event. Rises in water levels are anticipated but no river flooding is expected at this time. Additionally, high winds will be a concern across the southern panhandle as the system moves northward. A High Wind Watch is in effect for Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, and Metlakatla from the latter half of Saturday through Sunday morning, with gusts of up to 60 mph possible. Given the potential combination of high winds and heavy rainfall, isolated landslides may be possible in areas of steep terrain. $$
