.DISCUSSION...
Today through Tuesday...
After transitioning to northwest flow, a couple rounds of energy
and Pacific moisture will allow for precip chance (20-50%) today
and tomorrow. For today, radar is already showing snow showers
moving into the west with that snow expected to move east through
the morning and diminish into the afternoon hours. Amounts across
the lower elevations and foothills are only expected to be a few
tenths (mainly for south-central MT). Use caution if traveling
this morning as cooler road temperatures may make for slick road
conditions. Into Thursday, weak departing energy aloft as well as
some warm air advecting in from the southeast is expected to
create some rain/snow showers. With this warmer air nosing into
the region, there is a small concern for freezing rain, but models
are continuing to not show any strong signal for it.
Friday, a cool air mass from the north is expected to move in,
bringing high chances for the first measurable snowfall for many.
The bulk of the snowfall is expect to be Friday morning through
Saturday morning. In the Beartooth/Absarokas and Crazy Mountains,
around 5-10 inches are expected, with about 3-6 in the
Bighorn/Pryor Mtns. With northerly flow expected in the low/mid
levels, north facing aspects can expect to receive the highest
amounts. Areas across south central MT can expect to see 2-5
inches with 1-3 inches expected for southeast MT and north central
WY. With the sharp temperature/pressure gradient in place Friday
into Friday night, breezy north winds will accompany the snowfall.
Reduced visibilities can be expected, so use caution if traveling
during this time.
For the weekend and Monday, cooler and dryer air will set in with
not much is expected in the way of precipitation. High
temperatures are expected to be in the teens and 20s with morning
lows in the single digits to teens, with a few locations getting
below zero. Currently, there is a 20-50% (increasing northward)
chance for the region to see morning lows at or below zero on
Sunday. Ensembles show cooler air retreating Monday and Tuesday
with another potential system moving through Tuesday/Wednesday. TS
.AVIATION...
Snow is moving across terminals of south-central MT. Confidence is
highest for KBIL and KLVM to see snow reducing visibility, and a
small chance for the extent of the snow to reach KMLS. By the
early afternoon, snow will be tapering off, and prevailing VFR
conditions will return to all terminals. Vertz
