Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
303 AM CDT Tue Jun 18 2024

Today:

Much quieter conditions across the state early this morning after
the last few nights saw thunderstorm activity sweep through. Breezy
south winds have kept conditions warm and humid overnight with
temperatures still in the 70s to low 80s.

Storm chances quickly ramp up this afternoon and evening as a
frontal boundary noses into western Iowa. Some of these storms may
be strong to severe and produce damaging winds and large hail in
addition to heavy rainfall.

Tonight and Beyond:

Widespread showers and storms are likely tonight into Wednesday as
the front is slow to progress eastward. Some areas will see multiple
rounds of thunderstorm activity, which may result in heavy rainfall
amounts of 1 to 3 inches and potentially higher in some locations.
The rainfall and cloud cover will provide a brief reprieve from the
heat before conditions warm back up on Thursday and into the
weekend. Periodic chances for showers and storms remain in the
forecast, although the potential for severe weather remains
uncertain at this time.
