Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook

...Central/Northern Plains...
Accelerating mid-level flow south of a low-amplitude mid/upper
trough will move into the northern and central Rockies through
Friday. Surface troughing across the Northern Plains along with an
enhanced downslope drying and increasing westerly wind field across
the region should support several hours of elevated to locally
critical fire weather conditions for much of northwestern NE and the
Badlands area of SD on Friday. Sustained west winds of 15-20 mph,
relative humidity falling to around 20% and well above normal
temperatures in the 70s, despite expanding mid/upper level cloud
cover, will contribute to an increasing wildfire spread potential
amid dry and recently cured fuels. Elevated highlights were expanded
into southern SD and farther east into northern NE based on latest
forecast guidance.

...Eastern New Mexico and Western Texas Panhandle...
A more confined corridor of elevated fire weather conditions is
still expected across east-central NM into the TX Cap Rock area
Friday. Downslope enhanced westerly winds reaching 15 mph and
relative humidity dropping to 15-20% should present a few hours of
heightened fire weather concern for the area Friday afternoon.

...Synopsis...
In response to strengthening midlevel westerly flow across the
northern/central Rockies, surface lee troughing will be reinforced
over the High Plains. From southeast WY into western NE,
downslope-enhanced boundary-layer mixing into the strengthening flow
aloft will contribute to 15-20 mph sustained westerly surface winds
(with higher gusts) amid 15-25 percent afternoon RH. Given at least
modestly receptive fuels, a few hours of elevated fire-weather
conditions are expected.

Farther south, around 15 mph sustained westerly surface winds and 15
percent RH in the lee of the higher terrain from east-central NM
toward the Cap Rock will also contribute to a corridor of locally
elevated fire-weather conditions during the afternoon.
