.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

- The boundary between cold air north and warm air south remains
today, but a brief warming trend is expected on Tuesday.

- A few waves of passing snowfall are expected this week, mainly
  on Tuesday and Friday.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

Current temperatures show a very distinct border between
lingering arctic air along the Hi-Line and points northward, and
warmer air reaching up through central Montana. Today and tonight,
that will not quite be enough to erode away all of the cold
arctic air, as some of those single digit or near zero degrees
reading tonight will still hang on over the lower river valley
locations from Glasgow, through Wolf Point and Poplar, and to
Plentywood and Culbertson - even to Sidney.

But on Tuesday, a short-wave weather disturbance riding along the
northwest flow over our region will mix up the atmosphere enough
to allow some downslope warming temperatures to spread through the
entire state. High temperatures Tuesday will still be right around
the lower 30s, so any precipitation will remain as snow, and some
of the higher elevations of central Montana can expect
accumulations around 6 inches or more in 36 hours. Please note
that a few pockets of freezing rain or a rain/snow mix may be
possible. For us out here on the high plains, snow amounts will
be much less and more confined to the Snowy Divide in Garfield
County and the Big Sheeps in Prairie, McCone, and Dawson Counties,
maybe 1 to 2 inches. The associated cold front on Tuesday evening
will quickly shove those warmer temperatures south again, with
the snowfall ending early Wednesday morning.

Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, the pattern moderates a bit
more for dry conditions and another brief warm up.

Friday/Saturday, another short-wave disturbance along the flow
will bring another round of snowfall to northeast Montana. Until
more detail can be worked out, a widespread 2 to 3 inches is
expected for now.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:

Confidence is high for significant warming in temperatures through
Tuesday. Confidence is average to moderate for snowfall amounts as
some model data shows hints of scattered flurries also. Confidence
is average to low for snowfall amount details for this coming
weekend.
