Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
207 PM SST Tue Jun 18 2024

.Short term...

A ridge of high pressure has moved over the American Samoa islands
today. This has caused a change in the weather pattern as
rainfall is expected to be below average for the next 7 days. If a
shower occurs through early Friday morning, it would be a passing
shower and flash flooding is not expected. Winds are to decrease
through at least early Friday. From Wednesday night through Friday
morning, winds are forecast to be a light and variable wind. More
sun than clouds are expected during this time, so temperatures
are forecast to be above average.

On late Friday afternoon through early Saturday morning, a shear
line trough is anticipated to move from the south of the territory
to the north. Mid level air will remain drier than usual, but
there will be wind speed convergence as the trough moves through.
Therefore, the risk of rainfall increases to numerous (60%
chance) during this time but flash flooding is not expected.

.Long term...

After the aforementioned shearline trough moves to the north on
Saturday, a strong ridge will move over the region. Confidence is
high that winds will become southeasterly and may reach up to 20
mph. The drier than average rainfall is anticipated to continue
from the weekend and into early next week.

.Marine...

The latest information from the PacIOOS buoy to the east of Aunu`u
shows seas remaining around 8 feet. The seas remained slightly
higher than expected this afternoon as winds are still reaching a
fresh easterly breeze with a long fetch of winds from the east.
However, winds are expected to slowly decrease tonight to
eventually become a light and variable breeze for Thursday and
early Friday. There are no significant swell expected to move
through, so sea heights will primarily be caused by wind driven
waves. Since winds will decrease, expect seas to slowly ease
through early Friday.
