...ICE JAMS POSSIBLE THE NEXT FEW DAYS...

AS TEMPERATURES HAVE WARMED THE PAST FEW DAYS AND CAUSED RUN OFF
OF THE MELTING SNOW PACK...SOME OF THE THICK ICE THAT HAS FORMED
ON AREA RIVERS OVER THIS PAST WINTER HAS STARTED TO BREAK LOOSE.
AS THE LARGE ICE CHUNKS MOVE DOWN THE RIVER...THEY GET HELD UP
ALONG ANY SHARP BENDS IN THE RIVER OR NEAR BRIDGES. THIS WAS THE
CASE ALONG THE GRANT AND LITTLE PLATTE RIVERS YESTERDAY IN GRANT
COUNTY WISCONSIN. WHILE THESE ICE JAMS HAVE SINCE GIVEN WAY AND
FLOODING HAS SUBSIDED FOR THE MOMENT...THE THREAT WILL REMAIN
FOR FURTHER ICE JAMS TO FORM THROUGH THE EARLY PORTION OF THIS
WEEK AS TEMPERATURES WARM AGAIN WITH RAIN POSSIBLE ON TUESDAY.

THE LOWER REACHES OF THESE RIVERS TEND TO BE THE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE
TO ICE JAM FLOODING DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF ICE THAT COLLECTS RIGHT
BEFORE IT EMPTIES INTO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. SOME RIVERS WHERE
THE LOWER REACHES ARE SUBJECT TO ICE JAMMING INCLUDE THE TURKEY
AND UPPER IOWA IN NORTHEAST IOWA...THE ROOT...WHITEWATER AND
ZUMBRO IN SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA...AND THE
BUFFALO...TREMPEALEAU...BLACK AND GRANT RIVERS IN WESTERN
WISCONSIN.

IF YOU NOTICE AN ICE JAM AND RISING OR HIGH WATER FROM AN ICE
JAM...RELAY YOUR REPORT TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT SO THEY MAY TAKE
PROPER ACTIONS TO PROTECT PUBLIC SAFETY.
