Subject: Changes to Flood Stage and Flood Severity Categories for the
Humboldt River Near Elko

...New Flood Stage for the Humboldt River Near Elko Nevada...

In February 2017 the Humboldt River near Elko experienced the highest
flow and stage in over 20 years and the first flooding in over 10
years. Flood stages and impacts from the February event were evaluated
by the NWS in collaboration with our partners at the City of Elko
Public Works. New flood stages have been established to more
accurately reflect current conditions.

Starting October 17th, 2017 the new flood stages will be as follows:

RiverForecast PointSite IDNew Flood Stage Previous Flood Stage

Humboldt Near Elko HREN26.2/Minor 8.0
8.0/Moderate 9.0
10.0/Major 11.0

The National Weather Series defines floods stage as the river level
that begins to impact life and/or property. River flood warnings will
be issued by the National Weather Service in Elko when the river
reaches or is expected to reach or exceed flood stage. Minor flooding
is defined as: Minimal or no property damage, but possibly some public
threat. Moderate flooding is defined as some inundation of structures
and roads near streams, some evacuations of people and/or transfer of
property to higher elevations. Major flooding is defined as:
Extensive inundation of structures and roads, significant evacuations
of people and/or transfer of property to higher elevations.

This site can be accessed on the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service
(AHPS) webpage. AHPS allows users to see the observed and forecast
stage and volume for many rivers and streams, including the Humboldt
near Elko, at: water.weather.gov
