Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
206 PM SST Sat Aug 19 2017

.Short term...
TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT...A broad area of high pressure to
the southeast continues to move east. This high pressure coupled
with a deepening low pressure to the southwest will help pull
a line of clouds caught in the easterly flow across the Samoan
islands through Sunday morning. This pressure gradient will
enhance the likelihood of concentrated moisture and easterlies
over the region through tonight. Latest satellite imageries also
show this line of clouds embedded with thunderstorms to the north
of the forecast area. A weak surface trough to the west- northwest
will remain nearly stationary through the end of the short term
forecast. Therefore expect showers to diminish Sunday afternoon
and moderate to fresh easterlies to remain across the region
through the forecast period.

.Long term...
TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...The aforementioned trough will move
back to the northwest because of another high pressure following
the aforementioned low pressure. Moderate to fresh easterlies
embedded with scattered to numerous showers will prevail
throughout the long term period.

.Marine...
Wave Watch III model solutions are showing a 9 to 12 ft swell from
the east-southeast through tonight. Combined seas will begin to
subside to 7 to 9 ft by Sunday evening and remaining there
through Wednesday before subsiding further to 5 to 7 ft by
Wednesday. PacIOOS Wave buoy still shows wave heights above
threshold levels. Will continue the high surfs and small crafts
advisories through Monday.
