.OVERVIEW...Significant severe weather struck Hettinger County last
evening, June 21, 2016. Hail as large as baseballs and wind gusts up
to 80 mph blasted through the county, doing significant damage.
If that was not enough, a tornado moved from just southwest of Mott,
the county seat, and tracked three miles to the east from there.
The worst damage, and it was very significant, occurred to a home
about half way through the tornado path. The entire three stall garage
and half the roof were torn from the home. Windows were broken and
vehicles were damaged. Debris was strewn through a nearby field for
one mile. A little closer to the starting point of the tornado, a
home suffered roof damage and there was extensive damage to trees in
the yard.

There were no injuries and no fatalities from this tornado. People
in the two homes said they were aware of the severe weather risk.
They told the NWS survey team that they received weather warnings
through NOAA Weather radio and their cell phones. They took safe

Based on the damage done, the tornado was rated EF1 on the Enhanced
Fujita Scale. From that it was determined that tornado winds were
around 105 mph.
