AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR AMERICAN SAMOA AND INDEPENDENT SAMOA
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PAGO PAGO AS
137 PM SST TUE APR 22 2014

.SHORT TERM...
TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT...LATEST SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW A
BROKEN LAYER OF MID TO HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS STREAMING OVER THE
ISLANDS FROM THE WEST. THESE CLOUDS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH
THUNDERSTORMS ALONG A SURFACE TROUGH TO THE WEST OF SAVAII.
GLOBAL MODELS ARE SHOWING THIS SURFACE TROUGH MIGRATING TO THE
SOUTH OF THE TERRITORY...CAUSING A SLIGHT UPTICK IN CLOUD COVERAGE
AND RAINFALL TOWARDS THE LATTER PART OF THE SHORT TERM.
HOWEVER...A STRENGTHENING MID-LEVEL RIDGE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE
STABILIZING OF THE ATMOSPHERE...SUPPRESSING AND LIMITING MOST
CLOUD BUILD UP AND RAINFALL THROUGH THE WEEK.

LIGHT TO MODERATE EASTERLIES WILL PREVAIL THROUGH THE SHORT TERM
AS THE SURFACE TROUGH MIGRATE NEAR THE ISLANDS.

.LONG TERM...
FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...CLOUD COVER AND RAINFALL PROBABILITY ARE
EXPECTED TO TREND DOWNWARDS THROUGH THE LONG TERM AS THE
AFOREMENTIONED SURFACE TROUGH MIGRATES FURTHER SOUTH AND WEAKEN.
HENCE...THOUGH THE FIRST PART OF THE LONG TERM WILL HAVE SOME
SHOWERS AND CLOUDS...BENIGN WEATHER WILL RETURN BY AT LEAST
SUNDAY. LIGHT TO MODERATE EASTERLIES WILL ALSO DIMINISH BY SUNDAY
AS PRESSURE GRADIENTS OVER THE TERRITORY WEAKEN.

.MARINE...
WAVE WATCH MODELS DEPICT SEAS TO REMAIN BELOW ADVISORY THRESHOLDS
THROUGH THE FORECAST PACKAGE.
