Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
925 AM PDT Thu Apr 11 2024

.SYNOPSIS...High temperatures will remain above-normal for the next
few days underneath a ridge of high pressure. Temperatures will drop
through the weekend as a strong weather system drops into the area.
Gusty south winds expected areawide Friday and Saturday with a
slight chance of precipitation across the southern Great Basin.
Temperatures warm slightly through the work week, but will remain at
or slightly below seasonal averages.
&&

.UPDATE...
The warm up continues for at least one more day today. Temperatures
currently are averaging about 3 to 6 degrees higher than this time
yesterday. Overall, a tranquil day with light winds, warm
temperatures and plenty of sunshine across the southern Great Basin
and Mojave Desert today. No updates to the forecast this morning.
&&

.SHORT TERM...Today and Friday.

Las Vegas experienced the first 80 degree day of the year on
Wednesday, and temperatures will continue to increase today. High
temperatures across the forecast area will range 9 to 11 degrees
above seasonal averages underneath a ridge of high pressure over the
region. On Friday, Las Vegas has a 10% chance of experiencing 90
degrees for the first day this year, which would be right around
average. On average, Las Vegas reaches 90 degrees for the first time
on April 15th (calculated on a 30-year average from 1991-2020).
Otherwise, expect mostly sunny skies both today and Friday, with
light afternoon breezes today.

Friday, a closed area of low pressure over the southeastern Pacific
Ocean will become an open wave as it phases into a longwave trough
setting up over the western CONUS. As its former center of
circulation moves overhead Friday afternoon, heights will fall and
southerly winds will pick up across the forecast area. In general,
wind speeds are expected to remain sub-Wind Advisory on Friday, with
gusts between 25 and 35 mph. However, expect isolated gusts to 40
mph in the higher terrain.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday.

The next incoming trough is progged to dig south down the West Coast
and be positioned close to central California on Friday and
Saturday. Since it`s Spring, we can`t go more than a few days
without strong winds. The NBM shows a high chance of winds greater
than 40 mph across all of southern Nevada, southeast California and
northwest Arizona on Saturday that will likely warrant some wind-
related headlines.

As for the precipitation, the most significant segment of the
atmospheric river is forecast to remain through central California
Friday night into Saturday morning. The AR will then weaken as it
crosses the southern Sierra into the southern Great Basin Saturday
afternoon into Sunday. Current QPF forecast has up to 0.20" in Inyo
County, south central Nevada, and the Spring Mountains with 1"-3" of
new snow in the southern Sierra up to 9500 feet with 3"-6" near the
crest.

Ensembles show some form of a longwave trough staying over the
Intermountain West next week. This will likely lead to breezy
periods with temperatures well-below normal on Sunday, then slightly-
below to near-normal Monday through Thursday.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light, diurnal wind patterns today
through Friday morning. Variable winds this morning will become east-
northeast late morning and early afternoon with speeds remaining
under 8KT through the period. Typical light overnight southwest
winds return this evening. Increasing south to southeast winds are
possible after 16Z Friday morning with speeds at 8-10KT; however,
it`s more likely that winds will remain light and variable through
18Z and the increasing winds will not arrive until 18Z Friday or
later. No significant clouds or weather expected through the
period.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...KBIH will see south to southeast winds this afternoon
with a high probability for wind speeds of 10-15KT through 03Z
before wind speeds diminish. Otherwise, diurnal wind patterns are
expected today and tonight. Other than a few clouds over the
southern Great Basin this afternoon, skies will be mostly clear
across the region.
