Like January, Pacific storm systems continued their assault on the
western United States coastal and mountain regions in February.
Plenty of rain and snow was recorded up and down the coast with
several feet of new snow reported in the high Sierra. Bishop, CA
continued to add to an already wet year by receving 2.43 inches of
rain in February. This brought the yearly total to 7.66 inches which
is the second highest January/February total ever. Most other
locations around the region ended up with above normal precipitation
with the exception of Barstow and Las Vegas which ended up below
normal. However, there were several areas across the Las Vegas
Valley that did receive well above normal precipitation.
Temperatures averaged above normal across the entire region with
Needles, Mt. Charleston, and Las Vegas finishing in the top 10 for
the month. Las Vegas had the 4th warmest February on record with an
average temperature of 57.2 degrees. Three of the top four years
have all occurred over the past 3 years with 2015 being the warmest
and 2016 being the third warmest. The average minimum temperature in
Las Vegas was 49.0 which was 5.6 degrees above normal. This ranked
as the second warmest for minimum temperatures.

On February 18th a strong cold Pacific system moved into the region
producing widespread precipitation along with much cooler
temperatures. Las Vegas received 0.43 inches of rain for the day,
but Mt. Charleston received 16.0 inches of snow. This one day snow
total tied for the 14th greatest daily snowfall total ever during
any month. In fact, there have been three extreme snow events this
winter that have ranked in the top 14 of all time.
