...RARE LOW ELEVATION SNOW IN CLARK COUNTY ON MONDAY...

A COLD STORM SYSTEM THAT MOVED ACROSS SOUTHERN NEVADA SPREAD
PRECIPITATION INTO THE SPRING MOUNTAINS AND THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY
FROM SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND INTO MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD.
PRECIPITATION INITIALLY BEGAN AS RAIN IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS BUT
STARTING LATE SUNDAY EVENING INTO EARLY MONDAY CHANGED OVER TO SNOW
AS TEMPERATURES BEGAN TO DROP. SNOW WAS OBSERVED AS LOW AS ROUGHLY
2500 FEET EARLY MONDAY MORNING. IN MOST AREAS BETWEEN 2500 AND 3500
FEET, THE OBSERVANCE OF SNOW CORRESPONDED TO WHEN THE HEAVIEST
PRECIPITATION INTENSITY WAS OBSERVED AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS COLD
ENOUGH TO SUPPORT SNOW.

SIGNIFICANT SNOW FOR ANY TIME OF THE YEAR FELL IN THE LOWER
ELEVATIONS OF THE SPRING MOUNTAINS INTO THE FAR WEST SIDE OF THE LAS
VEGAS VALLEY.

AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CO-OP WEATHER STATION AT SPRING
MOUNTAIN RANCH STATE PARK AT 3780 FEET, A TOTAL OF 6.0 INCHES OF SNOW
FELL FOR THE 24 HOUR PERIOD ENDING ON FEBRUARY 23RD. THIS RANKS AS
THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL MEASURED AT THIS STATION SINCE MARCH 26-27,
1991 WHEN 6.0 INCHES FELL. AS FAR AS FEBRUARY SNOW EVENTS GO, THIS
RANKS AS THE HEAVIEST SNOW SINCE FEBRUARY 23-24, 1987 WHEN 8.0
INCHES FELL.

ON THE FAR WEST SIDE OF THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY, A TOTAL OF 1.5 INCH
WAS MEASURED IN SUMMERLIN AT 3100 FEET. THIS MARKS THE FIRST TIME
MEASURABLE SNOW HAS FALLEN IN SUMMERLIN SINCE JANUARY 3, 2011 WHEN 3
INCHES FELL. THIS WAS ALSO THE MOST SNOW TO FALL IN SUMMERLIN THIS
LATE IN THE SEASON SINCE FEBRUARY 26, 1996 WHEN AN INCH FELL.

THE LAST TIME MEASURABLE SNOW FELL IN FEBRUARY AT THE OFFICIAL LAS
VEGAS CLIMATE STATION LOCATED AT MCCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WAS
ON FEBRUARY 19, 1990 WHEN 1.4 INCH FELL. THIS EVENT PRODUCED 2.0
INCHES AT SPRING MOUNTAIN RANCH STATE PARK.

NOTE...NO SNOW AT ALL WAS REPORTED AT MCCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
FOR THIS EVENT. THEREFORE THE OFFICIAL LAS VEGAS SNOW TOTAL REMAINS
AT ZERO FOR THE MONTH.
